Whitby is a historic fishing port at the mouth of the River Esk, overlooked by the ruins of Whitby Abbey, founded in the 7th century and the site of the Synod of Whitby in 664 AD. The town later became famous for jet jewellery, as the training ground of explorer Captain James Cook, and as the inspiration for Bram Stoker's Dracula.
